When are accidents most likely to happen?

However, a new surprising statistic reveals that 25% of motor vehicle accidents happen within the first three minutes of the driver getting behind the wheel.

Shorter trips equal a higher chance of an accident

When it comes to quick trips to pick the kids up from school or running to the store for a couple of quick items for dinner, many of us don’t think about the possibility of being in an accident. We know the roads very well. This leads to overconfidence and actually increases a person’s risk of being involved in an accident.

This statistic was figured out due to a study that was done of 40,000 people over the years of 2018 and 2019. In its entirety, the study analyzed 3.2 million car trips and ended up totaling 1,986 motor vehicle accidents. For most of the 40,000 drivers, 87% of their car trips lasted for less than 30 minutes. As the study looked closer to the shorter trips lasting less than 10 minutes, it revealed that a quarter of all the accidents reported happened in the first three minutes of driving.

Ways to reduce your risk

Now, since you know that you’re more likely to be involved in an accident the first few minutes of driving, it’s time to do some things to help reduce your risk. The best thing that you can do is consider walking or even bicycling on very short trips. Make sure that your attention stays on the roadway regardless of how well you know the roads.
