How do I know if I’ve had too much to drink?

alcohol

Alcohol affects us all differently. One drink for a large, adult male may not affect his body at all, while an identical single drink may get a small female legally drunk.

As a Brooklyn car accident injury attorney, I have sadly seen the results of many instances where the driver had too much to drink. Getting behind the wheel drunk puts you, your passengers, and everyone on or near the roadway at risk.

So how can you tell if you’ve had too much to drink? In New York, the legal blood alcohol content limit for drivers over 21 years old is .08 percent.

Many people cannot tell if they are at that level, however.

I recently came upon a site that indicates what a “standard drink” is in the U.S. An American standard drink is any drink that contains about 0.6 fluid ounces of “pure” alcohol. Surprisingly, most single beverages contain approximately the same amount of alcohol.

All of the following drinks are approximately equal to a standard drink:

  • 12 fl oz of regular beer
  • 8-9 fl oz of malt liquor
  • 5 fl oz of table wine
  • 3-4 oz of fortified wine
  • 2-3 oz of cordial, liqueur, or aperitif
  • 1.5 oz of brandy
  • 1.5 fl oz of 80-proof spirits (a.k.a hard liquor)

To get a rough estimate of your blood alcohol content, I also found an online calculator. Enter the number of drinks you’ve had, the type of drink, your weight, and elapsed time to get an estimate. Please keep in mind that no blood alcohol calculator is 100 percent accurate, but it should give you an idea.

As a car accident injury attorney in Brooklyn, I ask that you please be smart and safe when drinking. Alcohol impairs the mind and body so much; it is critical that you behave in a responsible manner.
