Spinal Cord Injury Innovation May Lead to Cure for Paralysis

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a clinical trial to evaluate the safety of Schwann cells to treat paralysis in humans. The trial will use cells from the patient’s own body to help repair the spinal injury and may provide the key to eventual cures.

According to the National Institute of Health, Schwann cells are one of the most widely studied cells for paralysis treatment. The cells are found in the nervous system of the patient and are part of a system that sends electrical signals throughout the body. When injected near the site of the spinal injury the cells appear to work in collaboration with other cells in the area and promote both the growth and regeneration of injured cells in the spine.

Lab studies using paralyzed rats, mice, pigs and primates resulted in almost 70 percent of returned function and movement. As a result, researchers are hopeful that Schwann cells will lead to restored function and sensation to humans who suffer similar injuries.

Legal Help for Spinal Injuries

Spinal injuries are most often caused by car accidents, but also result from falls or accidents experienced by the victim while playing sports. Those who suffer from these injuries often require lifelong medical treatment and rehabilitation. The cost of this care is high, and compensation may be available to help. Legal compensation can extend to include future medical expenses, household services, loss of earning capacity and pain and suffering.

If you or a loved one suffers from a spinal injury, it is important to contact an experienced spinal injury attorney to discuss your legal options.
